Vancouver New Music and Early Music Vancouver present Stefano Maiorana: Secret Pages for theorbo, April 26

Set of antique and newly composed music by Hieronymus Kapsberger and Claudio Ambrosini evokes the sounds of Venice

In a copresentation by Early Music Vancouver and Vancouver New Music, Italian virtuoso Stefano Maiorana will perform Secret Pages at Pacific Spirit United Church on April 26 at 8 pm.

Secret Pages is a set of antique and newly composed music for theorbo—an instrument similar to a lute—that interweaves 20 works by Hieronymus Kapsberger (circa 1580-1651) and contemporary composer Claudio Ambrosini (born in 1948). Audiences will hear toccatas, arias, and dances for solo theorbo alongside soundscape recordings that fleetingly capture the essence of Venice: the lapping and crashing of waves, chiming bells and cawing gulls, moored ships and bobbing gondolas. It will all be broadcast in an immersive surround-sound audio setup of custom-made wood resonators.
