šxʷƛ̓exən Xwtl’a7shn, the plaza near the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, will be home to the Summer Sounds series presented by Vancouver Civic Theatres.
Vancouver Civic Theatres is presenting the free Summer Sounds open-air concert series every Thursday from July 10 to August 14. Enjoy live music on the sun-soaked plaza named šxʷƛ̓exən Xwtl’a7shn by the Queen Elizabeth Theatre from 5 pm to 7:30 pm. This year’s lineup features an electrifying assortment of local, national, and international artists.
The series kicks off on July 10 with the Indian Summer Festival Spotlight, a jam-packed evening of genre-defying music. Experience the expressive strings and vocals of Sejal Lal, the soulful melodies of Jody Okabe, and the hip-hop-infused soundscapes of kraKIN featuring Juno Award–nominated artist Ruby Singh. The evening culminates with the Surya Brass Band leading a procession through the plaza to Horizons, a ticketed Indian Summer Festival event at the Vancouver Playhouse at 7:30 pm.

On July 17, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival Spotlight is at the plaza. Experience two free world-class performances before they hit festival stages: virtuosic South African guitar duo Derek Gripper and Guy Buttery, and Emily Wurramara, a Warnindhilyagwa (Indigenous Australian) artist and activist who blends blues, indie-folk, and R&B influences.
Celebrate 25 years of Caravan World Rhythms on July 24 with an electrifying double-bill featuring Al Qahwa and Flávia Nascimento, along with Tio Chorinho. Al Qahwa weaves original compositions with beloved Arabic classics, while Nascimento and Tio Chorinho fuse Brazil’s rich musical heritage with danceable collaborations.
On July 31, a Vancouver Pride celebration lights up the plaza with performances by two phenomenal acts: houseguest, an all-trans rock band known for off-kilter garage rock, and queer femme band Hot Dyke Party, which performs electrifying cross-genre originals.
