Figure 1 Publishing has officially released Curve!: Women Carvers on the Northwest Coast, which features stunning photography of wood and argillite carvings by 14 Indigenous women artists on the Northwest Coast.

Though women of the Northwest Coast have long carved poles, canoes, panels, and masks, many have not become as well known outside their communities as their male counterparts. Along with an associated exhibition at the Audain Art Museum in Whistler (on display from November 23 to May 5, 2025), this book presents an 80-year overview of sculptural formats by Indigenous women in order to expand the discourse of carving in the region.

Both the exhibition and publication are co-curated by Dana Claxton, head of UBC’s department of art history, visual art, and theory; and Curtis Collins, Audain Art Museum director and chief curator.

A panel discussion at the museum will launch the exhibition on November 23.
