This year’s North Shore Jazz festival series takes place from June 20 to 29, featuring three stellar concerts at BlueShore at CapU and five free shows at venues across the North Shore, including the Shipyards. Presented by BlueShore at CapU in partnership with the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, North Shore Jazz features music for everyone.

Programming at BlueShore at CapU kicks off with Mary Ancheta’s MAQkestra Performs the Music of Betty Davis, June 21 at 8 pm. Keyboardist Ancheta has long been influenced by Davis, a crucial voice of 1970s funk (and Miles Davis’s wife). Ancheta’s mini-orchestra performs the diva’s sexually charged, incredibly funky tunes fronted by vocalists Dawn Pemberton, Leo D.E. Johnson, and Krystle Dos Santos.

Mick Flannery takes the stage on June 23 at 7:30 pm. The singer-songwriter from Cork, Ireland is renowned for his audience engagement and humour during live shows. Flannery’s latest release, Goodtime Charlie, is his third number-one album in Ireland.

Corey Harris wraps up the ticketed shows at BlueShore at CapU on June 26 at 7:30 pm. The American guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter carves out his own niche, infusing blues with reggae, soul, and West African traditions. Over the last 30 years, the MacArthur Fellowship winner has played with such artists as B.B. King, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, R.L. Burnside, Ali Farka Touré, and Billy Bragg.

Arabic jazz-pop singer-songwriter Farah Siraj, from Jordan, launches North Shore Jazz’s free shows at West Vancouver Library on June 20 at 7:30 pm.

More free concerts include Montreal-based hip-hop, Afrobeat, reggae, and Haitian-funk artist Waahli performing in collaboration with Vancouver artists Jacky Essombé, Yoro Noukoussi, and Kocassalé Dioubaté at Civic Plaza on June 21 at 1 pm. Retro-soul quartet Honeybear performs at Lynn Valley Village, June 22 at 1 pm. And accordionist Taras Luka’s quartet fuses jazz and pan-Latin styles at Civic Plaza on June 28, also at 1 pm. Finally, Montreal-based soul and R&B singer-songwriter Tina Leon heats up the stage at the Shipyards, June 29 at 7 pm.
