Whistler Children’s Festival returns for 40th year, May 19 to 21, 27, and 28

Arts Whistler presents Whistler Children’s Festival from May 19 to 21 and May 27 and 28

WHISTLER CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL is back for its 40th year. The city’s longest-running festival spans two weekends and is all about engaging entire families in arts and culture.

Among the events: a hand puppetry workshop with ventriloquist Kellie Haines; a performance by three-time world hoop dance champion Alex Well; DJ sessions with Shanique Kelly; circus acts and dance parties; crafts and activations along Whistler’s Cultural Connector; workshops on juggling and stilt-walking; and more. Fred Penner performs two shows, including one for big kids only, the After Dark Grown-Up Sing-Along 19+ at the Maury Young Arts Centre.

Of special note is a workshop at Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre called Discover your Animal Spirit. Stories about the relationships between animals and people are intertwined with the Squamish and Lil’wat cultures. According to legend, animals were humans in ancient times and considered each other siblings. Participants in the workshops (taking place at the SLCC) will be introduced to four animals in the traditional territory of the two Nations: eagle, bear, hummingbird, and wolf.
