Vancouver New Music presents Parallel 07: Martin Howse, March 15

U.K. artist and experimentalist to host a three-day workshop followed by a collaborative public presentation

Vancouver New Music’s popular Parallels series brings internationally renowned artists together with local musicians and community members to create new works that are specific to the time, places, and people involved. This year’s edition features U.K. artist Martin Howse, whose practice investigates links between the earth (geophysical phenomena), software, and the human psyche (psychogeophysics).

Howse will host a three-day workshop during which participants will develop hybrid instruments that open up human speech and vocalization to materials and built objects—sculptural “throats” that interact with dust particles, fluid, air, and organic and crystalline growth processes.

The instruments developed in this workshop will be used as part of a collaborative public presentation at the Annex on March 15 at 8 pm, with a pre-show artist talk at 7:15 pm. This show will be an extension of Howse’s live-performance work Tract.
