Join Surrey Art Gallery for an afternoon of artmaking and a theatrical performance at a spring Family Art Party on June 1, themed “Nurturing Nature” and inspired by the exhibition A Tangled Thicket. All are welcome at this free drop-in event, which runs from 12 pm to 4 pm; children must be accompanied by an adult.

A Tangled Thicket features paintings and handcrafted installations by South Surrey’s Z·inc Artist Collective, which is composed of Willa Downing, Lesley Garratt, Cora Li-Leger, and Claire Moore. The exhibition invites visitors to contemplate ecology, the natural world, and humanity’s place within it. Visitors are encouraged to playfully investigate the exhibition, answer questions, and try activities in the Art Monster Booklet guided by the Gallery’s Youth Docents.

In response to Li-Leger’s reflective art books, visitors will design and illustrate their own accordion book with the artist. They can also imagine nature’s unseen underground by creating a clay tile that riffs off Downing’s ceramic sculpture Rearranged Landscapes. Finally, participants can sculpt their own mobile with Moore, inspired by her ethereal sculptural installation Running on Sunlight, which is hanging from the ceiling.

Elsewhere at the Family Art Party, the Gallery will host a performance of The Great Bloom by Sydney Marino with the Victoria-based Story Theatre Company. This new Canadian comedy designed specifically for young audiences is about discovering the value each person can add to the world, even when one path looks different from another. The play promotes self-acceptance and touches on ecological themes. Upon arriving at the gallery, be sure to pick up free tickets for The Great Bloom, which will take place in the Studio Theatre (also housed within the Surrey Arts Centre) at 2 pm.

A dedicated sensory-friendly space at the party will promote quieter creativity with a paper landscape collage-making activity in a comfortable and relaxed setting. Additional resources, including noise-cancelling headphones, soft seats, and sensory toys, will be available to use. Folks with questions surrounding access needs or concerns can email artgallery@surrey.ca or call 604-501-5566.
