Violin virtuoso Henning Kraggerud performs Grieg and Mozart with VSO, January 6 to 8

The internationally acclaimed Norwegian musician is artistic director of the Arctic Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in partnership with the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts presents Grieg & Mozart featuring Henning Kraggerud on January 6 at 8 pm at Centennial Theatre; and on January 7 at 8 pm and January 8 at 2 pm at Chan Centre for the Performing Arts

NORWEGIAN VIOLINIST HENNING KRAGGERUD has performed at BBC Proms in London’s Royal Albert Hall, at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, to name just a few of the virtuoso’s career highlights. Next up is a performance with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Born in Oslo, Kraggerud is a recipient of the Grieg Prize, the Ole Bull Prize, and the Sibelius Prize. The artistic director of the Arctic Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, Kraggerud is an educator, composer, arranger, and improvisor who has also appeared with the Royal Danish Opera Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss, Toronto Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Danish National Symphony, Tonkünstler Vienna, BBC Scottish Symphony, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, among others.

When the artist joins the VSO, playing a 1744 Guarneri del Gesù (provided by Dextra Musica AS, a subsidiary of Sparebankstiftelsen DNB), he’ll perform Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 3 and Mozart’s Symphony No. 29. Also on the program is Romance for Harp, Violin & Strings by Amy Beach.

Kraggerud, who also performs on viola, has collaborated with the likes of Steven Isserlis, Joshua Bell, and Lawrence Power at major fests and venues including Wigmore Hall, King’s Place, Berlin Konzerthaus and Budapest’s kamara.hu festival. A professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) and the Barratt Due Institute of Musicin Oslo, Kraggerud became International Chair in Violin at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester in 2015 and received a Fellowship in 2017. Among his eclectic discography of 18 releases is a Naxos recording of Mozart Concertos Nos. 3, 4 and 5 with the Norwegian Chamber orchestra.
