CTORA Theatre presents the landmark Broadway musical West Side Story, one of the theatre’s finest accomplishments, from May 8 to 24 on the Granville Island Stage.

From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents’s book remains as powerful, poignant, and timely as ever, while the score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim are widely regarded among the best ever written.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs: the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Tony, a former Jets member, and Maria, the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo, struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence, and prejudice. Their story results in a musical drama that is at once innovative, heart-wrenching, and relevant.

Led by director Chris Adams and music director Kevin Woo, CTORA Theatre’s creative team brings extensive experience and a fresh perspective to this beloved tale. Suzanne Ouellette has meticulously recreated West Side Story’s 1957 choreography by Jerome Robbins, bringing the timeless energy and style of the original Broadway production to life.

A 14-piece orchestra has been assembled to honour Bernstein’s original orchestration, enriching the musical experience with powerful live instrumentation. The production also features a 16-foot-tall stage envisioned by renowned Canadian set designer Brian Ball, creating an immersive and visually striking backdrop that captures the vibrancy of New York City’s streets.

CTORA Theatre is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for both professional and emerging artists, fostering an inclusive community that welcomes diverse voices and ideas. The company has assembled a cast of nearly 30 talented actors to bring West Side Story to life, including Sayer Roberts as Tony and Cassandra Consiglio as Maria.

While West Side Story is a timeless classic, it includes mature themes, language, and scenes of violence that may not be suitable for younger children; parental guidance is advised.
